He plays the violin!

I am beyond thrilled to announce that I will be playing Martha Jefferson in 1776 the Musical at The Empress Theatre July 3-25! I love this play. I've wanted for 20 years to play this role. I'm excited to work with a lot of talented actors and a fantastic production team.

The cool thing is that a lot of us in the show are passionate about it. It's the story of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. I find the story and the characters fascinating, and some of the music is memorable -- my song is the best one ;) I just love it. I cannot wait to dive in.

After my first rehearsal, when I finally received a script and learned my song, I was so excited I posted this on Instagram and Facebook:
It's really real! I get to play Martha Jefferson and sing "He Plays the Violin." This is my life! #1776themusical #empresstheatremagna #ilovelivetheatre #dreamrole
Now, if only we can find a man to play Thomas Jefferson...

As is so often the case with musicals in the summertime, we need a few more men. Specifically, we need a Thomas Jefferson and a Benjamin Franklin. It's a challenge to find a talented guy who looks the part, is available, and wants to do this show. (That's the story of my dating life, too.) If you know of anyone who might fit the bill, please let me know.

Hope you all will come see me in this play. It's a perfect way to celebrate the birth of our country!

Bammy goes to Disneyland

One of the very best things in the world is going to one of your favorite places with some of your very favorite people, especially when one of them is your best friend.

Kate invited me to join her little family on a trip to Disneyland, and it was awesome. Five days (two at the parks and three for driving) with her, Brandon, and their little Monster* and we never got tired of each other. Nice to have the confirmation that I really do like these people :)

Traveling

We stopped in Las Vegas overnight, and had breakfast with Carrie.
I've missed her. I liked seeing her in her current hometown.
A beautiful family!
We had some time on the day we arrived to swim and walk around Downtown Disney.
I called it "Downton Disney" (like Downton Abbey) and giggled every time.
I think I'm hilarious.

First parks day: "Brazzle Dazzle Disney Day"

Obligatory main street pic
Winnie the Pooh
Monster's first ride at Disneyland - in his mother's words:
"I don't know if he liked it. He tolerated it."
Kate and I in line for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
Big Thunder Mountain rocks!!
Brandon got the better score (barely) on Toy Story Midway Mania, but I had higher accuracy.
Everybody wins!

Meeting Sullivan from Monster's Inc. We had a devil of a time tracking him down. We learned that it pays to make friends with the character assistants, because they'll do anything to make your dreams happen if you are nice enough (and show up early).
Watching a waterfall while Monster sleeps and his parents ride Grizzly River Run.
Baby-sitting at Disney is pretty great.
Kate and Brandon surprised me with dinner with the princesses at Ariel's Grotto. They'd been hinting for weeks about a surprise, and they gave me conflicting hints so I had no idea what it would be! I cried when Kate told me. It was a fun experience to share with my besty!
Rapunzel
Belle
Tiana
Mulan
She was perfect. How did she know I bring honor to my family?
Did I mention that the food was delicious?
For dessert, we each had creme brule, a s'mores thing, and a chocolate-dripped strawberry.
One of my favorite attractions is the Hall of Animation building in Disney California Adventure. In the main chamber, they play soundtracks for the animated films and show the backgrounds on huge screens that line the room. It's seriously cool. A great place to wait in line to meet Anna and Elsa.
I think the movie Frozen is a little overrated, and yet I almost cried when I met Anna and Elsa. I said I felt overdressed wearing a tiara when they weren't, and Elsa assured me that they do have them but Marshmallow the snow beast kept stealing them and wearing them around the ice castle when he thought no one was looking. It's nice that Elsa has come out of her shell a bit. Here I am posing like Anna. Disney princesses and queens are awesome.
We figured out that the car that has the most fun wins the race, so we made sure to tell everyone in the car to raise their arms and scream. We won both times!
Thanks to some friends who spotted us in the crowd, we had an awesome spot for World of Color!

Second parks day: "Zip-a-dee-doo-dah Disney Day"

Humidity + curly hair + roller coasters + bed head = really, really big hair the next morning
We got lucky and managed to snag photos with Mickey Mouse first thing.
He liked my outfit :)
Beignets and white hot chocolate for breakfast.
That was on my "Must Eat" list.
During Monster's morning nap, I drank a mint julep and sat with him in New Orleans Square while his parents rode Splash Mountain. I'm one of those [honorary] aunts.
(Notice that I didn't ride the water rides in spite of the delightful 80-85 degree weather.)
Kate and Brandon let me ride Space Mountain twice -- once with each of them.
I didn't get to ride this during my last trip (it was closed) and I appreciate their generosity. Space Mountain is a favorite!
The Storybook Canal boats added Arendelle to the landscape. So cute!
If you look closely, you can see Elsa's ice castle in front of the highest peak on the left
I don't remember the last time I rode the Casey Junior train. I LOVED IT.
I might need to make this a "Must Ride" next time I visit.

Cinderella's castle, 'cause she's my favorite
My last ride of the trip was the Hollywood Tower of Terror. I wasn't scared even though I went alone.
How could I be scared when Khal Drogo is there to protect me?

The photos never show a clear picture (no pun intended) of the whole trip. I don't have one of It's a Small World though we rode twice, or in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle, or the many times I tried to find a souvenir but was too tired to feel confident about any of my choices. And that's okay! There comes a time when I just want to enjoy the trip while it lasts and not worry about documenting every tiny, wonderful, glittering moment.

Thank you for inviting me, Kate. I adore you and your little family, and I am excited for our next adventure together, whatever it will be!

Awesome April

If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.
- J.R.R. Tolkien

I spent most of April hanging out with loved ones, completing a no carb/no sugar food challenge, and working out. I love it. My life is good.

Karate Kid movie night

One night at home, I watched The Karate Kid and ate the last cookie my mom gave me for Valentine's Day. I'm so happy that sugar cookies freeze as well as they do. I'd forgotten how good the movie is, too. Totally holds up!

Nichole's birthday

The night before Nichole's birthday, she asked if we could just buy a ton of candy and eat and hang out and talk at my house (we also got salads from Trader Joe's). I was happy to oblige. That's my favorite kind of celebration!
(The food challenge started two days later)

General Conference

My parents went to Greece for a couple of weeks. Since they weren't around for the usual General Conference brunch, Adam and Lindsey organized a potluck for between sessions. Because it was also Easter Sunday, the G-unit, Zonks, and Breezy "hid" plastic and hard-boiled eggs for their uncles, aunts, and cousin to find. We ate and played games, and when Conference started up again in the afternoon I stayed to watch with Adam and Lindsey. Such a good day!

Playing a game where you have to get your ball into the basket before
the person behind you does. I got second place during one game!

(I'm not in the picture because I was taking it)

Once the Musical

Theresa and I saw Once the Musical and it was WONDERFUL! Funny, and uplifting, and inspiring. I It's the story is a depressed Irish musician who meets a woman that inspires him. I made it a point not to listen to the music or watch the movie beforehand. I wanted to be surprised and watched with fresh eyes. I absolutely loved it -- no wonder it won the Tony for Best Musical in 2012.*
*If you see it, be warned there are a LOT of swears. It IS set in Ireland, after all.

A few favorite lines:
"You're like Mendelsson, but alive and Irish!"
"It's the voice...and the word." "Never sing." "Ever."
"Do you like being Irish?" "Seriously?"
"Nobody calls it 'hanky-panky' anymore." "Maybe that's why I can't find any."
"More song! Less pants!"

Dinner at The Garden

A few girlfriends got together to eat at The Garden at Temple Square and gab about our lives. I love catching up with these ladies! Must go back when I'm not dieting, because my friends couldn't get over how good the creme brulé was...
Theresa, me, Laura, and Shilene
The view from our table -- gorgeous!

April snowstorm

The biggest snowstorm of the 2014-2015 season occurred in April. I love Utah's sense of humor :)

Jobbiversary

Celebrated my 5 year anniversary at my job! I've never had any one job for this long. I am very grateful for a terrific manager (I seriously adore her), respectful co-workers, and work that I enjoy. I look forward to working with them a while longer (and to the raise, and the extra vacation days I have finally earned). I am lucky!

I ♥ Salt Lake

The beautiful Salt Lake Temple.

Nichole and Drew for all eternity

Nichole was sealed to her dear husband Drew at the Salt Lake Temple. I was honored to be invited, and to loan her my umbrella when the rain took its time letting up afterwards. Luckily, it did abate, and Nichole was able to have some professional photos taken of the special day.

Larissa, Tiffanie and I at the Salt Lake Temple after the sealing
Nichole had an open house that night, and they overestimated the amount of food they would need.
I took all of this home and put it in the freezer to eat after I finished my food challenge.
See Larissa's blog for the chocolate-chip cookie recipe.
*POST-CHALLENGE UPDATE* It was all delicious!!

Beloved babys' birthdays

This adorable little monster had a birthday, and his parents and their friends went all out with a Monsters, Inc.-inspired birthday party! It was fun to celebrate my besty's baby with so many of her loved ones!

I love how smiley he is!

My youngest nephew had a birthday, too, and the family spoiled him rotten at his sweet, small celebration. Oh, how I adore this stoic, inquisitive, happy little boy!

New flats

Been trying to replace these American Eagle flats for years, but all of the replacements have been disappointments until now. They are crazy-comfortable, and yet, after 5 years of use, the buttons are no longer predictably secure and I've worn holes into the soles. So long, AE flats. I wore you in NYC (twice), Philadelphia, Washington DC, Cedar City, and so many other places. Hope my new flats (on the left) are as reliable. I'll miss you cuties!

Accursed soda machine

The soda machine at work broke down several times. I wouldn't have minded so much if diet soda weren't one of the few treats I can have during this food challenge. #firstworldproblems

Please park inside the lines

Yes, he DID hit my car when he opened the door. He saw me see him, and his half-hearted "Sorry" just made me more mad. This is one of my biggest pet peeves, people! It isn't that hard to be a decent human being!

Flag football

Ended the month at one of the G-unit's flag football games. I'm glad I finally made it to one. It's fun watching him play -- he is so passionate and serious about it. Thanks, Aaron, for taking these perfect photos!

And now on to May, a bunch of auditions, a return to regular food, and a much, MUCH needed vacation!
