July!

July was filled with vacation and rehearsal, and I still managed to stuff in just a few other outings.

Another "sister" reunion, this time from Seven Brides: It was awesome seeing Erin play Penny in Hairspray. Goodness, she was funny! Best I've seen yet. And now that she's back in town, she, Nichole, and I need to hang out more.

We had a big meeting at work, after which they brought in several food trucks. Finally got to try Cupbop, which was DELICIOUS! And it was freebee!

On a particularly crappy day when I was feeling like a failure, I wrote up a "Did-do" list.
It helped -- I felt less defeated. I should make a habit of this.

"I blued myself!" I'd had this sucker for ages. It didn't disappoint.

Aaron is growing his lovely, thick hair out. I think I've
convinced him to stop calling this a "man bun" ;)

Speaking of flowing locks, here's another handsome boy and his gorgeous mom.

How cute are these girls?

They marched in a parade with their ward for the 24th of July

To celebrate Harry Potter's birthday on July 31, I read my gorgeous illustrated version of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Every illustration is breathtaking. I could do with fewer spiders, but everything else makes me smile. I first read the book exactly 15 years ago, and it never ceases to be magical!

March mayhem

March roared in like a lamb and out like a lion. Wait, is that the phrase? It doesn't matter. This was during the height of my post-NYC-feeling-sorry-for-myself-for-not-having-a-job funk. I took a break from life and interviews to attend all three days of FanX. And on the very last day of the month I was offered an amazing job with a surprisingly high salary. A Mercurial month indeed!

On the first day of the month, I joined Nichole as she fulfilled a wish: we saw the touring production of A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder. She was the one who first brought it to my attention, and seeing it with her was perfect symmetry. The musical was brilliant! Witty, and quick-paced, and very, very British. We laughed and laughed and marveled at the leading man's stamina (he rarely left the stage) and the other leading man's versatility and quick-changes. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for something silly and clever.

Mom and I drove to Provo to see the Provo City Temple during one of the final days of the open house. It is beautiful inside. I admired that they strove to keep as much of the original architecture and furnishing style as they could. I like the contrast between the dark wood and the bright and airy carpets and tapestries. It's a tiny building, but filled with everything necessary for a House of the Lord. I'm glad Mom wanted to go. I wouldn't have known what I was missing, and I'm glad I didn't miss it! Afterwards, we had uncommonly good pancakes at Penny Ann's. I love having one-on-one time with my mom. Our day trips were one of few good things about being out of work!

Liz and I intended to go to the Ogden Temple, but unluckily it was closed and neither of us had thought to check. So we drove a little further to the Brigham City Temple. It was smaller than I expected and really cute inside. One of the workers showed us around a few of the sealing rooms and explained that each of the temples pays homage to where it is located, so this one has a lot of peach blossom motifs (I didn't know before that Brigham City is known for its peaches. I'll have to check them out in the autumn).

Aaron and Anna hosted a swimming and pizza party at Aaron's apartment complex. It was low-key and fun. He's a darling uncle and the kids love him. The adults do, too, come to think of it. It's hard not to love Aaron!

I saw Zootopia on opening night with a couple of friends. I liked it a lot! Pixar lately seems to have an agenda in these movies, but oddly it was one of the first couple of lines that really resonated with me. Judy as a tiny bunny tells her parents she wants to be a cop. Her parents know this is an unlikely career bath for a rabbit, so they tell her that sometimes you have dreams and you don't achieve them, and that's okay, too. Judy then goes on to achieve her dream of being a cop and solving a huge mystery and all that, but I appreciated the almost throwaway moment where her parents acknowledge that even though your life may not be what you dreamed it might be when you were young, it can still  be pretty darn awesome. Sometimes dreams change. Sometimes you change. I needed to hear that right then.
Later that night, I blew a tire, but that's another story.

I saw one of my oldest friends perform as a narrator in a delightful Stake production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamboat. Michelle hadn't done a play since we were in high school. She sparkled onstage -- she should do it more often!
I saw one of my oldest friends perform as a narrator in a delightful Stake production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Michelle hadn't done a play since we were in high school. She sparkled onstage -- she should do it more often. I sometimes complain that Joseph is performed too often, but it doesn't stop me from enjoying it every time I go. I love the music!

On Saint Patrick's Day, my mom invited me over for corned beef and cabbage, and her famous sugar cookies. I played with baby PJ in his new cardboard-box house. He's such a charming boy!
I saw the movie Brooklyn later that night. It felt appropriate to see a movie about an Irish girl who finds herself in New York, then goes home to see what might have been had she stayed. All those lovely accents and costumes. Highly recommended!

Nichole and I supported Larissa in a darling production of Snoopy. It had similarities to You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, but not many. It was a lot of fun, though, and I liked a lot of the music. Talented people having a good time together. And Larissa was wonderful as always!

I auditioned for Big River at Hale, and to my surprise, I was called back, too! I wasn't cast, but I felt good about my work, and grateful they wanted to see me a second time. To celebrate, I ate a donut. The fluffy kind with chocolate frosting. YUMMY!!

Free pancake day at IHOP (I donated to charity, so it wasn't free, but I didn't mind giving money for a good cause AND good food). Then some time at the Salt Lake Temple. I tried to spend some time at a temple every week while I was unemployed. I didn't quite make it every week, but I got pretty close.

After my first job interview, I decided that I had to treat myself. McDonald's ice cream is only a couple hundred calories, so I thought it was a decent choice. I needed something after that interview. It was two hours long and it was harrowing!

Not my cutest outfit ever. If I ever interview for another new job, I'll have to buy something new.

After a few months' respite, we had snow near the end of the month. I got to wear the squashy purple coat and stylish boots I bought for New York City, so I didn't mind traipsing all over to do errands on a particularly snowy day.

Volunteered to judge a high school drama competition. It was hard work and I enjoyed it. The kids had worked hard. Some were better than others. But they were all supportive of each other and positive and the excitement was palpable. Trying to pick a first, second, and third place during the medals round was TOUGH! Everyone else by default tied for fourth place, but there were at least five kids who could have been in the top three. Made fifty dollars and had my faith in the future restored. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon.

This photo of my nieces makes me giggle. Zonks isn't paying attention, just walking away with her dessert, and Breezy is posing like a loon. They are such dear girls.

Lastly, on Easter Sunday I pulled this dress out of my closet. I bought it five years ago and it didn't quite fit back then. Now it fits perfectly. I had a lot of compliments on it. Adam said I look like Belle from Beauty and the Beast. And now I want to cosplay Belle. I feel pretty when I wear it. Not bad for a $6 find!

April is going to be big!

February!

Oh, February, historically my least favorite month of the year due to illness (thanks allergies), and general cabin fever. Thank goodness I found ways to amuse myself, and others once in awhile. It helps I had a great trip to New York City to look forward to and then muse upon after I returned home!

Food!

I'm trying to photograph less of my food (it's more difficult than I would have thought), but here are a few things:
I've been making good use of the waffle maker I received for my birthday. Here it is topped with Nutella AND Biscoff cookie butter. Try it. You'll like it!
On a particularly rough Sunday, I had an interview with a member of the Stake Presidency to renew my temple recommend. After a short conversation and commiserating over my unemployed status, he offered me as many Jelly Bellies as I liked -- pear and sour apple. Weirdly, they cheered me up. It's the little things!

CPT's Hats Off party

Since I wasn't in any of the plays at CenterPoint Legacy last year (though I did sing at the Fairytale Festival), Chantryce was sweet enough to invite me as her date for the Hats Off "Thank You" party. Even better, Larissa and Jamie gifted me a new/vintage dress that fit me perfectly, so I'd have something new to wear. I felt so pretty, and I enjoyed spending time with a ton of dear friends. I hope to do a show there sometime this year.

Before
After.
The hair didn't work out the way I'd hoped, but it was nice to try something new.
I had a ton of compliments on both the dress and the hair. My friends are the sweetest.
It cracks me up that my hair looks pink in this light. I wish!
Natalie got to wear her gown from The King and I when she sang at the party.
The dress rightly had its own applause -- it's spectacular!

Galentine's Day

Kate had the brilliant idea to commandeer Parks and Recreations' "Galentine's Day" party idea, and celebrate the women she loves most (or as many as she can gather together on a busy Saturday). I was honored to be included. Kate invited us all to Auntie Annie's Dessert Island, and made sure we all got to talk with one another, and play some fun get-to-know-you-better games, and my peach tart and "Princess Milk" was delicious. Kate's friends are my friends and I adore them all. It was wonderful having them all in one place. I'm already looking forward to next year!
These women are amazing

Valentine's Day

Since I had no official sweetheart this year, my Valentine's Day weekend was low-key. I liked it -- no sour grapes, I promise :)
One of my girlfriends hand-drew her own cards, and thoughtfully sent one to me.
It's the coolest Valentine I've ever received.
It now lives on my bookshelf; I display it proudly.
Valentine's Day was on a Sunday, and I spent it with my parents and little PJ. My nephew is my most adorable Valentine ever. I love this happy little boy!
Here he is squirting himself in the face with a water gun. He enjoys it so much. Almost as much as getting squirted by me - bwahahahaha!
My parents gifted me two lovely and warm sweaters. I wore them both in NYC :)

A belated Valentine's gift from Theresa. I can't imagine why she thought I'd like it.
Fun fact: I LOVE IT!

Evenings out

My friends continued to invite me out to try to cheer me up with the whole job loss thing. It's nice to be thought of. It's even nicer that they took action. I have such generous friends.  They love me for who I am and support me no matter what. I am grateful for every one and sorry that I don't have more photos!
I was lucky to win two free tickets to see one of the "Best of the Best" movies at the Sundance Film Festival. Gina and I didn't know until we arrived that we'd been viewing  Birth of a Nation, based on the true story of Nat Turner, a slave who lead a revolt against white slavers in the early 1800s. It was a beautiful, heartbreaking film. The distribution rights were sold for the highest bid in Sundance history. I'll be very disappointed if it doesn't receive a Best Actor (for Nate Parker) and Best Film nomination at the Oscars next year.
Liz and I happened to go to the Jordan River Temple on the anniversary of my endowment.
The temple was closed the next week so they could start renovating it. I'm sad they're going to make changes -- I was fond of it the way it was -- and looking forward to attending again next year when it's ready.
Chantryce invited the four of us to see a play at Weber State. Afterwards we had dinner at Chili's. These people make me think and they make me laugh.
Aaron called me up out of the blue and asked to take me out to dinner. Have I mentioned how much I adore this man? It's not very often I get him all to myself for a few hours. He gives terrific advice and is one of the people I trust most. Plus, he goes out of his way to have fun and it's fun to watch and play along. I'm lucky that one of my best friends is my brother.

Solitary entertainment

In the last year, I have had no less than four young men recommend The Way of Kings to me. I finally had a break in my ridiculously-full reading list and picked it up. I'm about a third of the way through now and it's awesome!
I have quite the collection of bookmarks. It seems wrong to use a bookmark that doesn't match whatever genre of book I'm reading.
I finally finished my book of Florida adventures. I did some heavy editing on my blog posts and finessed the text into the photo book. I'm quite proud of the result. It won't be the last such memory book I create.
To celebrate the 60th anniversary and donate to charity, Disney sponsored a "Show Your Ears" campaign, encouraging Disney fans to Instagram photos wearing mouse ears. I own many tiaras, but no ears, so I had to dig around to find this from my trip in 2010.
After months and months, I finally finished watching all 10 seasons of Supernatural on Netflix. I plan to watch the first 10 episodes of season 11 on Amazon, then finish up on Hulu. I'm so excited to be caught up!
To celebrate finishing season 10, I watched The Hillywood Show's spoof. I'm glad I waited, since it's basically the plot of season 10.
*SPOILERS*

And there you have it. Now that I've returned from New York, I need to focus on the job search. Hopefully there's some fun in there, too. Guess we'll see.
